JACKSON, Miss. - The Pirate women's basketball team was out-rebounded by 28 in the first round of the SCAC tournament, leading to an 81-43 loss to first seed and nationally ranked DePauw University.
Early foul trouble and a -16 rebounding differential cost the
Pirates in the first half and allowed the Tigers to continue to
build on their early lead. DePauw made more field goals than the
Pirates attempted as Southwestern trailed by 31 points heading into
the break.
As the second half got underway Southwestern continued to struggle
to secure a rebound and were never able to pull within striking
distance as they fell 81-43.
Southwestern shot 31% from the floor and 30% from three point range
while the Tigers were 40.9% from the floor and 50% from long range.
SU took care of the ball much better in the second half, only
committing four second half turnovers, 17 for the game.
Shae Seagraves was the lone Pirate in double figures with 13 points
while Staley Mullins had five rebounds to lead. DePauw had four
players, Mathews, Fernandez, Aldrich and Boraz, with a team high 12
points.
The loss marks the end of the 2009-10 season with SU closing it out
at 10-16 overall and 6-10 in the SCAC while DePauw advances with a
23-3 record. Jessica Herbst, Katie Kern and Narisa Trammell finish
up their careers as Pirates at the tournament.
