GEORGETOWN, Texas – Southwestern lost their first home
game this season in the championship game of the Holiday Classic
Tournament to Hardin-Simmons University 60-56. The Pirates fall to
4-6 on the season while the Cowgirls improve to 4-5.
Southwestern shot out of the gate and built a four point lead three
minutes into the game and retained the lead until HSU tied the game
at 17 with seven minutes to play. Hardin Simmons took the lead for
the first time with six minutes left and narrowly held onto the
lead, heading into halftime with a two point lead, 25-27.
At the outset of the second half Southwestern brought the game even
at 32 with 15:23 remaining in the game. Hardin Simmons took the
lead and Southwestern hung close through the majority of the second
half, eventually tying the game at 52-52 with two minutes
remaining.
The Cowgirls closed the game out at the free throw line to seal the
60-56 win.
Junior Shae Seagraves led the way with 21 points while seniors
Jessica Herbst and Narisa Trammell chipped in 10 a piece. Senior
Katie Kern continued her strong rebounding, pulling down a team
high eight rebounds. Hardin-Simmons’ Lindsey Newcombe led for
the Cowgirls with 14 points and 16 rebounds.
Southwestern remains at home as they return to conference action on
Saturday against Colorado College at 1:00 pm.
