GEORGETOWN, Texas – The Southwestern University
women’s basketball team remains unbeaten at home with an
82-62 win over Central College in the first round of the Holiday
Classic held in Georgetown. With the win SU improves to 4-5 on the
season and 4-0 at home.
The first half was a battle that saw three ties and nine lead
changes in the opening 20 minutes. SU trailed by as many as seven
twice in the period but mounted a 6-2 run to close out the first
half within two, 39-37.
A pair of free throws by junior Staley Mullins to start the second
half brought the game even just one minute into the final frame and
a fast break layup by Jessica Herbst put the Pirates ahead for the
final time.
The Pirates continued to thrive in the second half with the
quickened tempo as they turned tough defense into fast break points
and steadily built their lead throughout the half.
Mullins led offensively with 19 points while junior Shae Seagraves
was close behind with 17. Seniors Jessica Herbst and Katie Kern
scored 14 points and 12 points respectively. Kern was also the
leading rebounder for SU with eight.
Southwestern was +10 in turnover margin and recorded 14 steals
while shooting 47.7% from the floor and 46.2% from beyond the
arc.
The Pirates will face Hardin-Simmons University on Tuesday night in
the championship game at 7:00 pm. HSU defeated the University of
Pittsburg-Greensburg 79-70 in the last game of Monday night.
