Southwestern Men's Track and Field Picks Up Several Individual Wins at Trinity

SAN ANTONIO – The Southwestern University Pirates men's track and field team traveled to San Antonio to compete in the Trinity University Invitational.

Karlton Covington opened the meet with a victory in the 100 meters, finishing with a time of 11.22; narrowly edging out Concordia Texas' Connor Trevino (11.23). Nathan Botros and John Hattan finished first and second in the 800 meters with times of 2:06.13 and 2:09.46.

Hattan also finished fourth in the 1500 meters (4:16.35). C.P. Shaulis placed sixth in the 3,000 meters (9:46.00).

In the 4 x 100 relay, the Pirates team of Covington, Devin Rosas, Greg McDade and Keith Rupe finished second with a time of 46.57. Southwestern also placed second in the 4 x 400 with McDade, Botros, Covington, and Rupe finishing with 3:39.41.

Devin Rosas placed third in the high jump with a mark of 1.85m and third in the long jump with a distance of 6.60m.

In the shot put, Sam Grubbs and Mike May represented the Pirates with a third and fourth place finish, throwing 12.29m and 10.92m. The pair also placed fourth and fifth in the discus with Grubbs finishing with a 35.29m and May throwing a 33.54m.

"Overall I was happy with our team effort this weekend. It was a good meet to come back to after our big spring break trip," Head Coach Andrew Diehl said. "It was good to see consistency. It means we're on track for big marks later this season."

Southwestern will return to action next weekend, competing in the Angelo Relays in San Angelo, Texas on Saturday, April 6.
