Men's Track and Field Places Second at Island Meet

GULF SHORES, Ala. – The Southwestern University Pirates men's track and field team placed second at the Island Meet over the weekend, scoring a 116 in the four-team meet.

First year Karlton Covington placed first in the 100 meters with a time of 11.22, edging out Principia's Joey Onyechi (11.52) and Brian Malambwe (11.75). Greg McDade and Covington also paced the Pirates in the 200 meters, finishing fourth and fifth with times of 24.22 and 24.48.

Nathan Botros came in third in the 800 meters finals with a time of 2:05.14 and John Hattan won the 5,000 meters finals, finishing with a time of 16:07.84.

In hurdles, Keith Rupp placed second in the 110 with a time of 17.34 and Doug Ginsberg finished the 3,000 steeplechase with a time of 11:24.52 to place fourth.

The Pirates were victorious in the 4 x 100 relay finals with McDade, Robert Robuck, Devin Rosas, and Covington running a 44.95. In the 4 x 400 relays, Robuck, Rupe, McDade, and Covington placed second with a time of 3:40.59.

Rosas was victorious in the high jump finals with a mark of 1.85m and finished third in the long jump finals with a mark of 6.34m. Brandon Jennings placed third in the triple jump (11.79m). Mike May placed fourth in the hammer throw (11.15m) and fifth in the discus finals (32.48m).

The Pirates will travel down I-35 to compete in the Texas State Bobcat Meet in San Marcos, Texas on March 28 and 29, then further south on Sunday, March 31 to compete in the Texas Quad Meet hosted by Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas.
