Men's Tennis Seals Match Win Against St. Thomas

GEORGETOWN, Texas – The Southwestern University men's tennis team swept the University of St. Thomas Celts in the season opener, winning 9-0 over the Celts.

Southwestern won all three doubles matches, getting an 8-4 victory from Carlos Esteban Rodero and Drew Shuvalov over Juanrodrigo Lopez and Jace Ware in the No. 1 spot. "Drew and Carlos started out slow then just turned it up a gear and took care of business," says Head Coach Billy Porter.

Hunter Bajoit and Vesko Lekovic bested Tyler Head and Race Haas 8-5 in the No. 2 spot, and Alexander Joseph and first-time freshman Millan Fernandes defeated Dorian Cudina and Carson Steele 8-3 in the No. 3 spot.

In singles, Lekovic defeated Lopez 6-3, 6-3 in the No. 1 spot. Porter says, "Vesko embraced playing at #1 and played a solid match beating a good opponent in tough conditions." Bajoit won over Haas in the No. 2 position by a score of 6-1, 6-3 and Joseph defeated Head 6-1, 6-3 in the No. 3 spot. Rodero won 6-1, 6-1 to Ware playing at in No. 4 singles and Steven Tibbetts won over Cudina 6-4, 6-2.

Playing at the No. 6 spot and competing in his first college match, Anton Borovik defeated Steele 6-0, 6-0. "Anton was lights out in his first college match and I am happy to see him get his first college win," says Porter.

With the win, the Pirates improve to 1-0 on the season. Now Southwestern gets ready for next week's home match against Mary Hardin-Baylor on Friday, Feb. 12th at 4:00 PM.
