Pirates Can't Cash In on Opportunities in Loss to Pacific

GEORGETOWN - The Southwestern University men's tennis team had their opportunities, fighting off rain all afternoon and evening in a tightly contested battle with Pacific. However, the Boxers emerged victorious late Tuesday night with a 6-3 win at Marvin D. Henderson, Sr. Tennis Courts.

"We gave away opportunity after opportunity and Pacific did a great job of taking advantage of that," said Head Coach Billy Porter.

The Boxers were able to snag a huge advantage in doubles, taking courts one and two for a 2-1 lead going into singles. Sophomores Dean Dulthhummon and Jeremy Wilson earned an 8-3 win at three doubles. Sophomore Tyler Norman and senior David Strong fell just short at No. 2 doubles, 9-8.

"Dean and Jeremy were phenomenal at three doubles giving us a much needed boost going into singles," added Porter.

In singles action, sophomore Alexis Dimanche earned a tough 7-6 win in set one and followed up with a 6-3 win in set two to take one singles. Junior Alonso Fernandez added a 6-1, 6-2 win at six singles.

"Alexis got an outstanding win that he needed," said Porter. "He adapted well the longer the match went and it showed."

However, it was Pacific who finished strong, earning straight set wins at two and five singles while Dulthhummon and Norman dropped tough three set matches. Dulthhummon fell 6-2, 4-6, 4-6 at three singles while Norman fell 1-6, 6-4, 5-7 at four singles.

Southwestern will pick themselves up and look to bounce back tomorrow at home as they welcome in No. 33 Colby for a 5 PM match-up.
