GEORGETOWN - The 36th-ranked Southwestern University men's tennis team fell to UT Permian Basin on Saturday morning by the score of 8-1 at the Marvin D. Henderson Tennis Courts.
"Our execution was subpar today, especially on the big points," said Head Coach Bill Porter. "We left way too many games out there today and it added up."
The Pirates struggled in doubles play, dropping all three matches despite a strong showing from senior David Strong at No. 2 doubles, along with partner Tyler Norman in an 8-3 loss.
"David Strong was our lone bright spot in doubles today playing at a very high level," said Porter.
In singles action, it was senior Grant Gideon coming through as the bright spot at No. 2 singles. Battling back after losing set one, as well as an early deficit in set two, to take the match and the lone point for the Pirates, 5-7, 7-6, 10-7.
"Grant showed immense heart after losing a tough first set and being down 0-3 in the second set to pull it out in the third," said Porter. "Really pleased with the atmosphere our guys created today and were played a pivotal role late in Grant's match to get him to the finish line."
Southwestern goes to 1-2 overall and will return to action on Wednesday as they will make up the postponed match against Concordia (TX) from earlier this week. First serve is set for 5 PM.
