No. 36 Pirates Roll Sul Ross in Home Opener

GEORGETOWN - The 36th-ranked Southwestern University men's tennis team rolled past the Sul Ross State Lobos in their home opener by the score of 9-0 on Thursday evening at the Marvin D. Henderson, Sr. Tennis Courts.

The Pirates started strong in doubles action as the No. 1 team of sophomore Alexis Dimanche and senior Grant Gideon as well as the No. 3 team of sophomores Jeremy Wilson and Dean Dulthummon each earned 8-0 wins at their respective courts.

The No. 2 team of senior David Strong and sophomore Tyler Norman completed the doubles sweep as they earned an 8-3 win at No. 2 doubles.

"It was a huge hold at 6-3 by Tyler down 15-40 to send a strong message that we wanted the doubles sweep," said Head Coach Billy Porter.
 
The momentum carried over to singles as the Pirates swept all the matches for the 9-0 sweep. Norman, Strong, and senior AJ Garcia all earned 6-0, 6-0 sweeps at No. 3, No. 5, and No. 6 singles. Gideon earned a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 2 singles while junior Alonso Fernandez was victorious 6-2, 6-0 at No. 4 singles. Dimanche won at No. 1 singles by the score of 6-2, 6-2.
 
"We played solid tennis, showing a lot of patience and picked our spots to go for the right shots," said Porter. "It was a very special night for us wearing the Matt Ellis patch and the guys were excited for the home opener even more than usual."
 
Southwestern opens their home season with a bang and moves to 1-1 overall. They will hit the road and head to the Louisana/Texas border for matches all weekend. It all starts on Saturday as the Pirates face LSU-Shreveport at 10 AM followed by Texas-Tyler later that day at 4 PM.
