Pirates into SCAC Tennis Championships

Pirates into SCAC Tennis Championships

With a 5-2 win over Schreiner University the Southwestern men's tennis team earned a spot in the 2015 SCAC Tennis Championship match slated for Sunday at 9 am.

Schreiner jumped out to a 2-1 lead through doubles play. Niko Snovely and Grant Gideon dropped the first set and were playing catch-up the rest of the way and just couldn't get over the hump as they fell 8-5 in #1 doubles. Rod Khansari and William Ellis quickly found themselves down 5-0 at #2 doubles and fought back but couldn't overcome the early deficit, falling 8-4. Sam McCready and Oliver Farmen earned the tough win at #3 doubles, 8-5.

SU got down to work in single matches, however, and quickly jumped on top in four of the five matches. Neik Khansari posted the first singles win, taking down Isaac Vasquez at #4 6-1, 6-0. William Ellis followed suit by making quick work of Josh Ramirez in #5 singles, 6-3, 6-1.

Niko Snovely made it three straight for the Pirates with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Nick Pena at #1 singles and Oliver Farmen finished off the Mountaineers with a gutsy performance at #2. Farmen won the first set 6-2 and was embroiled in a battle in the second set but finished off Carrola 7-6 (7-5) to seal the win.

Southwestern improves to 17-2 on the year and moves into the championship match to face Trinity University.
