Men’s tennis unbeaten streak snapped by nationally-ranked Patriots

Southwestern had their toughest weekend of play yet and were narrowly edged out in their final match to snap an eight match win streak.

The Pirates defeated East Texas Baptist and LeTourneau University 8-1 before falling to UT Tyler on Saturday afternoon 8-1.

SU won two of the three doubles matches but strong armed the Tigers of ETBU on Friday night to win all singles matches. Niko Snovely, Ayinde Hall and Keik Khansari all need extended sets to win but were able to tough out the wins.

Against LeTourneau the Pirates won all three doubles matches easily. Grant Gideon and Snovely won 8-1 in #1 doubles, Rod Khansari and William Ellis won 8-2 in #2 doubles and Sam McCready and Oliver Farmen took care of business in the #3 slot 8-1.

Snovely once again had a tough assignment in #1 singles but was able to pull out the win to remain undefeated in singles play, winning 4-6, 6-2, 10-3. Hall fell in the #2 slot but the Pirates rebounded and easily handled the rest of the lineup for the win.

SU knew they would be in for a dog fight in their final match of the weekend against UT Tyler. The Patriots took all three doubles matches, but by a narrow margin, 8-4, 8-4, 9-7.

Snovely fell in three sets, 2-6, 6-3, 10-5 while William Ellis was the only Pirate to pull out a win, taking down Cameron McCarthy in #6 singles 6-3, 3-6, 10-7.

The Pirates improve to 8-1 on the year after the weekend and return to action at home on April 1st to face Arizona Christian at 3 p.m.
