Pirates open SCAC action with big win

LONGVIEW, Texas – The Pirate men's tennis team split a pair of road matches Saturday shutting out Centenary in SCAC action, 9-0, before falling to LeTourneau, 6-3, in a non-conference tilt.

The win moved the Pirates record to 4-2 on the year and 1-0 in league play with the win over the Gents. Southwestern returns to the court next Saturday, March 29, against Sul Ross State in Brownwood, Texas.

The Pirates started the day in dominating fashion rolling to a 9-0 win over an undermanned Centenary squad.

Egan Cornachione and Zayn Evans started the Pirate scoring during singles play with 6-0, 6-0 winners at No. 2 and No. 5 singles.

Derek Grass and Alvaro Rojas also finished off easy matches as Grass picked up a 6-0, 6-1 win and Rojas earned a 6-1, 6-1 win at the No. 3 position.

Sam McCready and Cornachione started the match with an 8-3 win at No. 1 doubles as Edward Yu and Alex Wong also won 8-3 at No. 2 doubles. The Pirates picked up the third point at No. 3 doubles with a default win.

The Pirates traveled down Interstate 20 to Longview in the afternoon to take on LeTourneau University in a non-conference tilt. In the night cap the Pirates didn't fare as well falling 6-3 to the Yellow Jackets.

Southwestern raced out to a 2-1 lead after doubles action with Niko Snovely and Derek Grass earning an 8-6 win at No. 1 doubles. The pair of Sam McCready and Egan Cornachione followed their lead battling to a 9-7 win at the No. 2 position before the Yellow Jackets took No. 3 doubles 9-7.

However, in singles action it was all LeTourneau as the Pirates only point came at No. 1 singles with Snovely defeating Laird Beaty. Snovely picked up a 6-2, 4—6, 1-0 (10-4) victory for the final point of the match for Southwestern.
