SAN ANTONIO — The Southwestern University Pirates men's swimming and diving team won the program's first ever SCAC Championship on Saturday night at the Palo Alto College Aquatic Center.
Southwestern built a lead on Day One of the four-day competition and never relinquished the lead, though things got close on the final day of competition with Trinity University pulling within four points. The Pirates came together as a team, however, with Carl-Ake Wilberg, Keith Gill, Todd Coachman, and Peter Robinson clocking in at 3:04.39, setting a new school record.
"It was an amazing past four days," Head Coach Jon Duncan said. "We really stepped up and swam out of our minds. The team is special because everyone cared for one another. We all wanted to become better.
"Big shoutout to senior Peter Robinson, who led this team! Also, thank you to Sarah James and Scott McLean, they've been a great coaching staff."
The Southwestern trio earned the SCAC Men's Swimming and Diving Staff of the Year, though Trinity swept the individual awards.
Southwestern finished with 884 points, picking up individual wins from Gill and Alek Argueta on Saturday with Gill taking the 100 free (45.72) to set a new school record and Argueta winning gold in the 200 breaststroke (2:05.42). Matthew Overman finished second in the 1650 free, setting a new school record with a time of 16:15.98.
