Southwestern opens competition at Trinity Invite on Saturday

SAN ANTONIO – The Southwestern University swimming and diving teams fared well at the opening day of the Trinity Invite on Saturday. The men's squad wrapped up the first day in first place, while the women are in second.

The Pirates men's team was led by a pair of strong relay performances.

The 200-yard freestyle relay (Michael Glover, Alex Christensen, Matt Sluss and Simmon Belaineh) placed first with a time of 1:24.08, less than a second off the school record.

Belaineh, Glover, Sluss and Mickey Scharbrough combined to win the 400-yard medley relay. The foursome posted a time of 3:27.13, which is the fastest mark of the season for the squad.

Sluss also won the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:42.08, missing his school record by less than one second.

On the women's side, Alexandra Morris finished second in the 500-yard freestyle, touching the wall in 5:20.31.

The 200-yard freestyle relay team (Cara Chin, Marisa McCormack, Erika Dubros and Madison Doty) posted a runner-up finish with a time of 1:40.32.

Southwestern trails Trinity by only 10 points heading into the final day of competition.
