Pirates in 2nd and 3rd after Day 2 of SCAC Championships

Highlighted by a sweep of the top four places in the men's 200 individual medley, the Southwestern men's and women's swimming and diving teams had a strong second day at the SCAC Championships. The men sit in second place, trailing Trinity by 23 points, and the women sit in third.  

Abby Miller kicked of the day with an eighth place finish in 1-meter diving with a score of 270.10 after the morning preliminaries.

The women's 200 free relay of Madison Doty, Marisa McCormack, Makaylee Frederick and Blythe Nava brought home a third place finish with a time of 1:39.11, beating their seed time by nearly a second and a half. The "B" squad of Ryann Lawley, Natalie Lesnick, Marissa Byrd and Emmy Gradisar came in ninth place for 12 points with a time of 1:42.73.

In the men's edition of the event, the Pirates' "A" squad posted a second place finish by shaving nearly two seconds off their seed time. Simmon Belaineh, Matt Sluss, Nathan Townsend, and Zach Kline finished with a time of 1:23.79 to earn 34 points for Southwestern. The "B" team of Michael Glove, Mickey Scharbrough, Andy Seymour, Ty Lapinski finished in eighth with a time of 1:26.36 for 14 points.

Alex Morris posted a top eight finish in the 500 yard free with a time of 5:20.68 for sixth place. Michael Glover, Shelby Hall and Ty Lipinski finished in the top 8 on the men's side with Glover taking second in 4:43.01, Hall third in 4:43.58, and Lapinski in eighth in 4:49.84.

Natalie Lesnik had the first, first place finish for the Pirate women, taking gold in the 200 yard IM in 2:10.11. The men went 1, 2, 3, 4 in the men's version with Matt Sluss leading the way for gold in 1:53.55. Alex Villarreal took silver in 1:54.88, Mickey Scharbrough bronze in 1:55.16 and Julian Smith fourth in 1:55.63.

In the final event of the evening, Blythe Nava snagged eighth in the 50 free in 25.02 and on the men's side Nathan Townsend moved up two places to finish in sixth in 21.73.
