Records continue to fall at SCAC Championships

ROCKWALL, Texas – Kyler Wood highlighted the third day of the 2014 SCAC Swimming and Diving Championships  earning a NCAA "B Cut"  and a SCAC title, while setting a school record as four more school records fell on  Friday.

Wood edged Casey Colella of UC-Santa Cruz to win the 100-yard breaststroke on Friday night for the second win of the weekend for the Pirates. The junior's time of 57.10 was also a NCAA B mark for the NCAA national championships next month.

Emily Haskell also joined Wood winning the first SCAC title of the weekend for the Southwestern women in the 100-yard breaststroke. Haskell swam to a first place time of 1:06.23 to edge Krystal Feri of UC-Santa Cruz for her first medal.

The Southwestern men set three more school records with Shelby Hall and Evan Jones earning top 10 finishes in their record setting performances. Jones finished eighth in the 100-yard butterfly with a school record time of 51.97.

Hall finished seventh in one of the fastest events of the night – the 200-yard freestyle. Hall earned a time of 1:44.86 to break Dylan Johnson's record set just last season, while the first place time from Centenary's Austin Butler earned a NCAA B cut.

After Thursday night's record setting performance from the 400-yard medley relay, the Pirates got another record setting performance from the 200-yard freestyle relay team. Southwestern finished second behind Trinity with a time of 1:24.14 with the team of Simmon Belaineh, Zach Kline, Hector Posadas and Kyler Wood.

On the women's side, Southwestern also earned a top five finish in the 200-yard freestyle relay as Madison Doty, Emily Haskell, Blythe Nava and Makaylee Frederick finished third. The Pirate quartet grabbed a time of 1:40.16 to finish behind Colorado College and Trinity.

A trio of Pirate women grabbed top five finishes on Friday as well to help Southwestern hold steady in the team standings in fourth place.

Madison Doty finished third in the 100-yard backstroke as Alex Morris and Kenly Gaynor each finished fifth respectively. Morris swam to a fifth place finish in the 100-yard individual medley while Gaynor finished fifth in the 100-yard butterfly.

The women's standings remained the same in the top five as Trinity was followed by Colorado College with UC-Santa Cruz in third.

In the men's standings the Pirates held steady again in second although UC-Santa Cruz moved into a tie with Southwestern with 403.5 points each. Trinity remains in the lead heading into Saturday final day with 547 points.
