Pirate swimmers finish exciting sweep of Falcons

GEORGETOWN – The Southwestern University swimming and diving teams battled off tiredness from two-a-day practices during January to defeat UT-Permian Basin Saturday for a men's and women's sweep of the Falcons.

The Pirate women took a commanding 150-128 win, while the men came down to a single point with Southwestern holding onto a 135-134 victory over NCAA Division II UTPB.

On the women's side of action Emma Florence continued her dominance on the 1-meter and 3-meter diving as the first-year diver took home first place honors in both. She was followed by teammates Abby Miller and Andrea Bruti in second and third place in both respectively.

Alex Morris stepped up for the Pirates as she captured her first win in the 200-yard IM with a time of 2:23.40 which was just ahead of teammate Mara Weidmann.

Also taking home first place honors for Southwestern was Madison Doty in the 100-yard backstroke and Blythe Nava in the 50-yard freestyle. Doty continued her impressive run in the backstroke with a time of 1:00.92, while Nava edged a group of swimmers with a time of 25.82.

The depth on the Pirate women's side was in full force Saturday as Southwestern finished second in seven more races. Doty and Nava also earned runner-up finishes in the 500-yard freestyle and 100-yard butterfly. Morris finished just behind Doty in the 500-yard freestyle while Sarah Alpini gave the Pirates two swimmers in the top three in the 100-yard butterfly.

Pirates earning runner-up finishes included Jessi Winters in the 100-yard freestyle, Emmy Gradisar in the 200-yard freestyle, Mara Weidmann in the 100-yard breaststroke, Kenly Gaynor in the 200-yard butterfly, and Marisa McCormack in the 100-yard freestyle.

A little more drama ensued on the men's side of competition as the Pirates picked up wins in the 1000-yard freestyle from Tommy Frashier, the 200-yard butterfly from Shelby Hall and the 50-yard freestyle and 100-yard freestyle from Simmon Belaineh. Belaineh was flanked by teammates Kyler Wood – finishing second – in the 100 and Alex Christensen in the 50, who finished third.

The dual came down to the final event of the day the 200-yard freestyle relay. Southwestern earned a first place finish with a time of 1:27.81, but it was the third place finish with Zach Kline, Shelby Hall, Nathan Townsend and Oliver Sale finishing two seconds ahead of UTPB to help propel the Pirates to a one point win.

Southwestern also showed depth on the men's side with eight runner-up finishes which included five events that Pirate swimmers finished second and third. Also with a second place finish was the Pirates 200-medley relay team of Lapinski, Wood, Hall and Belaineh.

Both Pirate squads take two weeks off before gearing up for the SCAC Championships Feb. 12-15 in Rockwall, Texas.
