SAN ANTONIO – The Southwestern University men's and women's swimming and diving teams returned to the pool Saturday against NCAA Division I Incarnate Word as both Pirates are coming off winter two-a-day workouts.

The Pirate men put up a tough battle against the Cardinals before falling 161-114 while the Incarnate Word women earned a 210-71 win over Southwestern.

Both Southwestern teams rallied after returning to the competition pool for the first time in over a month.

Five SU men grabbed first place finishes paced by Kyler Wood picking up a first place finish in the 50-yard freestyle. Wood also earned a second place finish in the 200-yard breaststroke.

Simmon Belaineh and Shelby Hall were able to swim to a pair of first place finishes as well. Belaineh in the 100-yard freestyle and Hall in the 200-yard butterfly as Hall also finished second in the 500-yard freestyle helping the Pirate men in the final standings.

Tommy Frashier and Ty Lapinski also earned first place finishes as Frashier's came in the 1,000-yard freestyle with Lapinski earning first place honors in the 200-yard backstroke. Frashier picked up second place points for the Pirates as well in the 200-yard backstroke giving Southwestern a 1-2 finish.

The Pirate men also picked up a first place finish in the 200-yard freestyle relay and in the 1-meter diving competition from Sam Visser.

The Southwestern women earned a pair of second place finishes in the 200-medley relay and the 200-yard freestyle relay.

Both squads return to action as they host Centenary College next Saturday, January 18 at Walzel Natatorium.
