Men's Soccer Falls Short Against Austin College

SAN ANTONIO – A strong second-half push wasn't enough to extend the Southwestern University Pirates men's soccer team's season, falling 1-0 to the Austin College Kangaroos in the first round of the SCAC Championship Tournament.

Southwestern fired off five of their eight second-half shots in the final 15 minutes, placing only one on goal, which was stopped by Austin College goalie Juan Rodriguez.

Both teams played to a standstill with stout defense through most of the first half until Austin College pressed the advantage late. From the 35-minute mark, the Kangaroos fired off two quick shots and three consecutive corner kicks, finally breaking through on an unassisted goal by Isaiah Wingeier-Rayo.

Austin College finished the first half with a 6-3 advantage in shots and 5-2 in corner kicks, taking the 1-0 lead into the break.

The Pirates countered in the second half, putting three of their four shots on goal in a half in which they outshot the Kangaroos 8-4, but Kangaroos' goalkeeper Juan Rodriguez made three big saves in the half to preserve the shutout victory.

With the loss, the Pirates end their season with a 10-7-2 record, scoring 29 goals on 13.5 shots per game. They were 4-4-1 in conference play.
