SAN ANTONIO – The Southwestern University Pirates men's soccer team was defeated in the First Round of the 2018 NCAA Division III Men's Soccer Championship Tournament, losing 2-0 to the University of Mary-Hardin Baylor Crusaders.
The Pirates' defense blocked three early Crusaders' shots and disrupted a corner kick before Mary Hardin-Baylor's Mathew Lay scored his first goal of the season, getting the unassisted game-winner at the 17:42 mark.
Southwestern continued to fight as it had all season, controlling the game offensively early in the second half, producing 13 second-half shots and two corner kicks after recording nine and one in the first. Mary Hardin-Baylor got a brilliant performance from All-ASC Second Team goalie Travis Aday, who saved all 10 of the Pirates' shots on goal.
Mary Hardin-Baylor picked up an insurance goal at the 71:06 mark when Steven Dang headed in a pass from Rolando Nieto to give the Crusaders a 2-0 lead.
For the game, the Pirates outshot the Crusaders 22-17. Southwestern goalie Alan Carr saved four shots. Brendan Dauth and Dejan Savic each had four shots to lead the Pirates with Savic getting two shots on goal.
With the loss, the Pirates finish the season 12-6-3. The Crusaders improve to 16-3-1.
