IRVING, Texas — Two second-half goals cost the Southwestern University Pirates men's soccer team on the road on Sunday afternoon, losing 2-1 against the University of Dallas Crusaders.
Taking the pitch after a week of rain, the Pirates struck first, getting a penalty kick goal from senior Alex Newell at the 35:40 mark in the first half; his third goal of the season.
The Pirates held the Crusaders, the SCAC's second-ranked team in shots per game at 16.3, under its season average at 14 shots (seven each half) while firing off 19. Dallas was a bit more opportunistic with theirs, getting 10 shots on goal to Southwestern's eight.
Dallas broke through in the second half when Tomas DePetris delivered a pass to Hunger Haugland in front of the net to beat the keeper, tying the match at the 50:47 mark. A foul on the Pirates at the 67:57 mark setup the Crusaders' deciding goal, giving DePetris a free kick just outside the box to find the right corner of the net for his first goal of the season.
Southwestern had two shots on goal within a minute of each other, getting a shot from Kip Karschnik at the 76:20 mark and a header by Sacco Fernandez out of a corner kick at the 77:17 mark, which were both stopped by Dallas goalie Jacob Chimento.
Chimento finished with seven saves while Southwestern goalie Alan Carr had eight. The Pirates held an 8-4 advantage in corner kicks but committed two more fouls at 11-9.
With the loss, Southwestern drops to 9-5-1 on the season and 7-4-1 in conference, sitting in third place behind Dallas, who improved to 8-5 on the season and 7-4 in conference. The Pirates will hit the road on Tuesday against conference leader Trinity at 6 p.m. before closing out the regular season at home against Dallas on Oct. 26 and Austin College on Oct. 28.
