Men's Soccer Shutout In Loss To JWU

GEORGETOWN, Texas – The Southwestern University Pirates men's soccer team controlled the time of possession against the Johnson & Wales University (JWU) Wildcats but could not capitalize on several opportunities, losing 1-0.

Southwestern more than doubled JWU in shot attempts, outshooting the Wildcats 23-10, including a 10-4 first half in which the Pirates repeatedly pressed its advantage to gain a 4-1 edge in corner kicks.

Unfortunately, a header into the back of the net was called back due to an offsides penalty and the shots generated from Southwestern's corner kicks and sideline throw-ins were just a bit too high or wide and both teams headed into the half scoreless.

JWU struck early in the second half, getting the game-winner from Lemi Abera on a pass from Emad Mohammed at the 53:22 mark. Southwestern managed 13 shots in the second half with only two on goal as the Pirates were shutout for the first time since their season opener.

Alex Newell and Andrew Hernandez each had three shots for the Pirates while Luke Stanton, Jake Swonke, Marcello Gonzalez, and Theo Perisic finished with two each. Alan Carr finished with two saves on three shots on goal.

With the loss, Southwestern drops to 8-4-1 on the season and 6-3-1 in conference. The Pirates will continue conference play on Sunday, hosting Colorado College at 12:00 p.m.
