SHREVEPORT, La. – Luke Orren came off the bench in the second half to score the only goal of the match, giving the Southwestern University Pirates men's soccer team a 1-0 conference victory over Centenary College to stop a two-match losing streak.

Southwestern outshot Centenary 19-7 for the match, dictating the pace in the first half by holding their opponent to just one shot while the Pirates took five of their eight corner kicks before the break.

"Tonight's win was a much-needed return to our early season form," Pirates Head Coach Dustin Norman said. "Our backline managed the game and our goalkeepers came up big when called upon."

Goalies Sam Laude and Alan Carr combined for four saves in the shutout with Carr posting three in 61 minutes and 49 seconds.

The Pirates totaled six shots on goal, finally breaking through in the second half at the 57:22 mark on a throw-in from Wil Mekelburg. His high-arching pass fell perfectly between two defenders as Orren leapt over them to deliver a header into the back of the net for his first goal of the season on his first of two shots on the night.

"Coming into the second half, Luke Orren provided a spark off the bench. His energy was just as important as scoring a goal," Norman said. "The timing of his run on the set play was fantastic."  

With the win, the Pirates improve to 7-3-1 on the season with a 5-2-1 record in conference. They'll resume play on Tuesday, Oct. 9 with a road game against Schreiner University. Southwestern defeated them 2-0 in their previous match this season.
