Pirates Drop Regular Season Finale to UC-Santa Cruz

GEORGETOWN - In their regular season finale, the Southwestern University men's soccer team fell to the UC-Santa Cruz Banana Slugs by the score of 1-0 on Sunday afternoon at the Varsity Field.

It was a defensive battle as neither team could get much of anything going in their attack. Southwestern held a slight 10-8 advantage in shots taken while UC-Santa Cruz held a 5-4 lead in corner kicks on the day.

Southwestern was the aggressor in the first half, out shooting the Banana Slugs 6-2, but had nothing to show for as no goals were scored throughout the first half. UC-Santa Cruz broke through in the 54th minute as Bryan Rodas gave them the 1-0 lead.

The Banana Slugs did a great job limiting Southwestern's opportunities throughout the second half as the Pirates only got off four shots in the period. It was enough for UC-Santa Cruz as they escaped Georgetown with the road victory.

Senior Ryan Benner finished with four saves on the afternoon. Sophomore Kip Karschnik led the attack with three shots taken while sophomore Roberto Guzman added a pair of shots.

Southwestern concludes the regular season at 5-11-3 and will prepare for the SCAC Championship beginning next weekend. The Pirates, the No. 6 seed in the event, will travel to Irving to take on the No. 3 seed Colorado College Tigers beginning at 1:30 PM.
