First Half Goals Too Much for Pirates to Overcome

First Half Goals Too Much for Pirates to Overcome

GEORGETOWN - A pair of Austin College goals from Thomas Quick in the first half proved to be too much for the Southwestern University men's soccer team, as they could not cash in on their opportunities in a 2-0 loss to the 'Roos on Friday night at Varsity Field.

The two teams were even in shots with nine a piece while Austin College held the slightest of margins in corner kicks at 2-1. The 'Roos were about to put four of their nine shots on target to the Pirates three.

It was a sloppy first half for both teams throughout much of the first half as both teams were able to move possession deep into the opponents territory, but could not connect on passes to get quality looks on goal. The sloppiness continued for Southwestern as a turnover at midfield led to a breakaway goal for the elusive Quick in the 32nd minute.

Later in the 40th minute, Quick struck again, this time getting a little luck as a pass deflected off a Southwestern defender and the forward, who eluded the goalkeeper and found the empty netter for a 2-0 lead before the break.

Southwestern's attack found a resurgance in the second half, getting creative with their offense and finally getting quality looks at goal. The Pirates got numerous good shots off in the box, but could not cut the deficit down to pressure the 'Roos.

The Pirates came close on a free kick outside the box that found junior Jake Swonke, who appeared to chest it down and fire it past the goalkeeper. However, a hand ball was called in the box, negating the goal and keeping it a two goal deficit.

Despite a much better second half from the attack, it was not enough as Austin College's strong defense held on for the win.

Sophomore Dejan Savic was a spark off the bench, leading the attack with three shots. Southwestern got good minutes off the bench from freshman Luke Stanton and senior Santiago Salazar, while also getting a good effort from sophomore Kip Karschnik. Senior Ryan Benner had four saves in net on the night.

The Pirates move to 3-6-3 overall and 1-4-3 in SCAC play. They will look to right the ship on Sunday as they take on the Centenary (LA) Gents at 2 PM from Varsity Field.
