Pirates Lose Heartbreaker to Dallas Thanks to Late Goal

GEORGETOWN - The Southwestern University men's soccer suffered a 2-1 loss to Dallas in SCAC play on Sunday afternoon at Varsity Field as a Crusader goal in the 85th minute was the game winner.

Though the contest was close for most of the match, the Crusaders were in control when it came to offense as they out shot the Pirates 19-6 including 14 shots in the first half alone. Southwestern did hold a 7-5 advantage in corner kicks on the afternoon.

Dallas got on the board first in the 19th minute as a deep throw in from Eric Haigh was deflected by Nat Kajwara, finding the back of the net from 10 feet out and giving the Crusaders a 1-0 lead.

With less than 10 seconds to play in the half, senior Carlos Huntley-Jimenez found the equalizer as he scored on a deep free kick, lofting it over the keeper to even the match with two seconds to play before half, giving SU a lot of momentum going into the break.

In the second half, both defenses stepped up and gave the attack trouble as only eight total shots were taken between the two teams.

However, Dallas found the game winning goal in the 85th minute thanks to a stunning free kick from Tomas DePetris to move ahead 2-1. Dallas was able to regain control and limit any more chances from Southwestern to earn the 2-1 road victory.

Sophomore Justin Cruz led the attack for the Pirates with two shots on the day while Huntley-Jimenez scored his second goal of the season and his second in the last four contests. Senior Ryan Benner had two saves in goal on the afternoon.

Southwestern moves to 3-5-3 on the season and 1-3-3 in conference play. They prepare to begin the second half of the conference season on Friday as they welcome in Austin College for a 7 PM kickoff.
