Pirates Play to Draw in Home Opener Against Schreiner

GEORGETOWN - After spending most of September on the road, the Pirates finally opened their home season. However, for the third straight match, the Southwestern Pirates played to a draw, ending in a 2-2 contest with the Schreiner Mountaineers in SCAC action on Friday evening at Varsity Field.

Schreiner had a slight edge in shots over Southwestern, 17-15, including a 5-2 advantage in extra time. Southwestern had the advantage in corner kicks, yielding a 5-3 advantage.

In the first half, Southwestern took a 1-0 lead as sophomore Luke Orren scored his first goal of the season in the 15th minute on an assist from senior Christian Lopez for the early 1-0 lead. They took that lead into the break, but Schreiner had a response early in the second half, scoring on a bullet from 25 yards out from Rodrigo Navarrette to even the match.

One minute later in the 56th minute, senior Carlos Huntley-Jimenez scored his first goal in the seasoon as Lopez sent in a beautiful ball down the middle of field to the streaking Huntley-Jimenez, who finished for the 2-1 lead.

However, Schreiner again had an answer, scoring in the 64th minute as Gregg Gutierrez lofted one over the keeper in the box to even the match again.

From there, the match moved into overtime for the third straight time for the Pirates, and neither team could find the golden goal as the match ended in a draw.

Orren and Huntley-Jimenez each converted on their first goal of the season while Lopez had his first two assists of 2017. Junior Jake Swonke had five shots to lead the attack. Senior Ryan Benner finished with seven saves in goal on the evening.

Southwestern moves to 3-2-3 overall and 1-0-3 in SCAC play. They return to their home pitch on Sunday afternoon as they battle No. 6 Trinity at 2:00 PM.
