Swonke Scores Two; Pirates Earn Second Consecutive Draw

SHREVEPORT, La. - After scoring a goal in a 1-1 draw two days ago, junior Jake Swonke scored a pair of goals on Sunday afternoon as the Southwestern University men's soccer team earned a 2-2 draw with Centenary at Mayo Field.

The Pirates out shot the Gents 28-20 on the day including a 23-16 advantage in the first half. Centneary lived for the corner kick, earning nine to the Pirates' four.

Centenary jumped out in front in the 15th minute as Scott Halper scored off a corner kick for the early advantage. The Pirates responded as junior Kip Karschnik found Swonke for his second goal of the weekend to tie the game up at one a piece. Despite 13 shots from the Pirates, the game went into half tied at one.

In the second half, the Gents took the lead back at 2-1 as Chase Clark scored on a free kick. Swonke, again, had an answer in the 76th minute as Karschnik earned his third assist of the weekend and second of the game to even the match.

Neither team could push ahead in regulation and the game moved into extra time for the second consecutive time for SU.

Both teams saw opportunities in the extra period with Southwestern holding a slight 5-4 advantage in shots throughout all of extra time. However, similar to Friday, the chances went awry as the game ended in a draw.

Swonke had seven total shots on the afternoon while senior Christian Lopez added five targets. Senior Ryan Benner finished with seven saves on the day.

Southwestern moves to 3-2-2 overall and 1-0-2 in SCAC play. After nearly a full month on the road, the Pirates finally open their home season on Friday night as they welcome in Schreiner University for SCAC play at 7:00 PM.
