Pirate Men Earn Road Draw Against Austin College

SHERMAN, Texas - In a tightly contested match that saw 38 total shots from both squads, the Southwestern University men's soccer team played to a 1-1 (2OT) draw against conference-foe Austin College on Friday evening.

The Pirates out shot the 'Roos 20-18 on the night including 17 shots in regulation while the Pirates earned five corners to Austin College's six.

Southwestern was the aggressor in the first half, getting seven shots off throughout the period. It would pay off for the Pirates in the 32nd minute as senior goalkeeper Ryan Benner sent a long kick to junior Jake Swonke, who beat the keeper to the left for the 1-0 lead.

SU took the lead into the half, but Austin College found an equalizer in the 57th minute, as they took advance of a foul in the box and Phillip Le finished on the PK to even the score at one. The Pirates turned up the pressure late in the second half, getting five shots off in the final 12 minutes to no avail as the game went into extra time.

Throughout both periods of extra time, both teams had numerous opportunities to put the game away, but finished just short. In the final five minutes of the second OT, Austin College hit the crossbar, Benner made a save, and junior Kip Karschnik just missed the mark as the final whistle blew for the draw.

Senior Christian Lopez and Karschnik each finished with five shots each while Swonke added four attempts at goal. Benner finished with four saves on the evening.

Southwestern moves to 3-2-1 overall on the season and 1-0-1 in conference. They will look for the full three points on Sunday as they travel to Shreveport to take on Centenary in another SCAC match at 2 PM.
