Trio of Pirates land on All-SCAC teams

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. – Three Southwestern University men's soccer student-athletes earned All-Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference honors, the league office announced on Monday. David Arellano received first-team laurels, while Carlos Huntley-Jimenez and Jake Swonke were named to the second team.

Arellano, a senior defender from Austin, spent the last three seasons as a team captain for the Pirates. He anchored a defense that posted a trio of shutouts in 2016. Arellano, who was a second-team all-league honoree a year ago, started all 20 contests and took five shots, including three on target. He posted a pair of assists on the year, one of which set up Alex Newell's game-winning score in Southwestern's come-from-behind 4-3 victory at Schriener on Oct. 2.

A junior midfielder from Austin, Huntley-Jimenez had a breakout campaign, scoring three goals and assisting on four others. All three of his goals came in Pirate victories, including game-winners against Austin College (Sept. 18) and Schreiner (Oct. 23). In Southwestern's 4-3 win against the Mountaineers on Oct. 2, he netted the first goal that started the second-half comeback.

Swonke, a sophomore forward from Cypress, led the Bucs with 14 points, including five goals and four assists. He became a second-team pick for the second straight year. Swonke five scores all came in Southwestern wins. He netted two scores, including the equalizer, in the Pirates' come-from-behind win at Schreiner on Oct. 2. He scored a goal and set up the game-winner against Texas Lutheran on Sept. 13. Swonke also dished out two assists in Southwestern's 2-1 win versus Austin College five days later. He lifted the Pirates to a 3-2 win over Dallas with a goal in the 93rd minute.

Southwestern finished the campaign with an 8-12 overall record, including a 7-7 mark in the SCAC.
