Men’s Soccer closes home season with win over Austin

GEORGETOWN, Texas – Four seniors, Garhett Bonneaux, Ryan Jones, Zach Faulkner and Paden Williams closed their collegiate home appearances with a 2-0 win over Austin  College.

Austin College nearly took the lead early with a shot inside the six-yard box. Quick's spinning shot bounced off the left post and was quickly cleared away by the Pirates to keep the game scoreless.

Southwestern started to get great looks at goal midway through the first half, but Michael Oliveras' and Carlos Huntely-Jimenez's shots sailed just over the crossbar. The foundation had been laid, however, and soon SU made the goal a reality. David Arellano played the ball ahead to Oliveras just outside the 18. Oliveras played the ball to Andres Carreño-Mendez just inside the 18 but straight on goal and Carreño-Mendez buried the ball in the back of the net, just inside the right post to give SU a 1-0 lead.

Austin College came out pressing in the second half a got three strong looks at goal but weren't able to score the equalizer. Garhett Bonneaux calmly put home the penalty kick resulting from Christian Lopez being tackled in the box ten minutes into the second half to give Southwestern some breathing room with a 2-0 lead.

With just under nine minutes to play the 'Roos closed the gap as Quick snuck one just inside the post, cutting Southwestern's lead to one, 2-1.

The Pirates were able to hang on for the win despite the renewed vigor from AC. Both teams posted 11 shots and three saves while AC had one more corner kick, 3-2.

Southwestern improves to 7-9-1 on the year and 7-5-1 in the SCAC while Austin falls to 1-13-4 overall, 1-10-2 in conference. With one game to play the Pirates sit in third place in the standings and seem poised to take the #3 seed into the SCAC Conference Tournament Southwestern closes the regular season in San Antonio on Friday, facing the nationally-ranked Trinity Tigers at 5 pm.
