Win streak moves to four with win over Schreiner

GEORGETOWN, Texas – Southwestern's Andres Carreno-Mendez scored the game winning goal in the 70th minute to defeat Schreiner 1-0 on Sunday and extend their win streak to four.

Southwestern was hot offensively from the opening whistle and had two great looks at goal in the first five minutes of the contest.

Schreiner's best looks of the half came as the Mountaineers capitalized on Pirate mistakes in the backfield. Travis Carmichael was forced into action as the last line of defense and made the tough saves to keep the Mountaineers off the scoreboard.

With fresh legs on the pitch, Southwestern controlled the majority of the final 25 minutes possessing the ball over 13 minutes.

Southwestern came out of halftime as a new team and were knocking at the Mountaineers' door the entire half. The Pirates finally saw their work pay off as Santiago Salazar made his presence known immediately after coming off the bench. Salazar played a beautiful ball down the right side to Andres Carreno-Mendes who dribbled into the box and cut the ball back to middle and played a low driving shot into the back of the net to put Southwestern up 1-0 with 20 minutes to play.

The Pirates seemed poised to score another in the remained of the game, but weren't able to put the ball in the net as time expired.

Southwestern led 19-9 in shots and 11-5 in corner kicks. Travis Carmichael recorded three saves in the win while his counterpart, Blake Lawson of Schreiner had four.

With the win, Southwestern improves to 4-5-1 on the season and 4-1 in the SCAC while Schreiner falls to 3-4 overall and 1-3 in conference play.

Next up for the Pirates are the Tigers of Colorado College who are currently unbeaten in SCAC action. The two teams will face off on Friday at 7 p.m. at the varsity fields at Southwestern.
