Men’s Soccer falls 4-2 to Christopher Newport

SAN ANTONIO, Texas – Southwestern trailed just 1-0 at halftime, but a second half that saw five goals went against the Pirates as they dropped their fifth match of the season.

SU was outshot 12-3 in the first half but were only down by one at the break. Christopher Newport scored in the 17th minute, but Travis Carmichael kept the Pirates in the game with five first half saves on six shots on goal.

CNU also had seven corner kicks while allowing Southwestern none.

The scoring deluge started early in the second half as CNU scored just seven minutes in. Carmichael made the initial save but Alex Makumbi put in the rebound to extend their lead to two. Andres Carreno-Mendez scored the response, assisted by Christian Lopez, in the 60th minute and pulled the Pirates back within one.

Just two minutes later CNU scored another but Carreno-Mendez's shot to the right upper 90 from the middle of the box, assisted by Charlie Berndt and Garhett Bonneaux, kept SU within one.

In the 71st minute CNU scored the final goal of the match and sealed the Pirates' fate for the 4-2 loss.

Southwestern falls to 0-5 on the year while CNU improves to 5-1 on the year. The Pirates return to SCAC action as they face the University of Dallas on Friday at 3 p.m. in Irving, Texas.
