SAN ANTONIO, Texas – Washington University scored two first half goals and Southwestern was held scoreless as they fell 2-0 to start the 2014 season.

A penalty kick in the 12th minute gave Washington the lead as Jonathan Lipsey pushed it past starting keeper Travis Carmichael.

WU added their second goal in the 18th minute and held on for the win.

At the start of the second half Southwestern seemed to have a new strategy and got off four shots in the first 11 minutes while keeping WU without a look at goal, but were unable to put it in the back of the net.

Southwestern took 15 shots, four on goal, in the game while WU took 13 shots, four on goal. Carmichael recorded two saves in the loss.

The Pirates remain in San Antonio to face St. Scholastica at 8 p.m. at Trinity University.
