Three Pirates tabbed as All-Region

KANSAS CITY, Kansas – Three Southwestern seniors earned their first NSCAA/Continental Tire NCAA Division III Men's All-West Region selection announced Monday by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America.

Matthew Nickell, Steven Resnik and Daniel Poole have racked up the honors in their final season and added one more to their belts.

Nickell, a defender from Aledo, Texas, was a Second Team pick and led the backline for the Pirates that allowed just 24 goals in 22 games, recording eight shutouts this season. He was also a big part of the offensive attack, as the third leading goal scorer for the Pirates with four goals and third in assists with five. He took 12 shots with 10 being on goal for an astounding .833 shots on goal percentage. Nickell was also named the SCAC Defensive Player of the Year while earning a First Team All-SCAC selection.

Resnik, a midfielder from Austin, Texas, joins Nickell on the Second Team All-West Region report and was also a First Team All-SCAC pick. Resnik was a catalyst for Southwestern's offense and was the leading point getter and goal scorer with nine goals and 19 points. Resnik also led SU with five game winning goals this season including the final goal in overtime as the Pirates took down Colorado College in the SCAC Conference Tournament Semifinal thriller.

Rounding out the Pirate representation in the report was Daniel Poole. A goal keeper from Shreveport, La., Poole was nearly impenetrable in goal for Southwestern as he posted seven shutouts, a 0.96 goals against average and .833 save percentage this season. His save percentage set a new SU record, beating out Jacob Henderson in the 2005-2006 season who tabbed a .829 save percentage. Poole was also a Second Team All-SCAC selection and earned the Defensive MVP award for the SCAC Conference Tournament after helping the Pirates advance to the finals with two penalty kick saves and a tournament-high 13 saves.

Southwestern posted their most successful year to date with a 14-7-1 overall record, 11-2-1 in conference play, and fell to Trinity in the SCAC Conference Finals.
