Three goal second half lifts Pirates to win

GEORGETOWN, Texas - The Pirate men returned to their winning ways with a 4-1 win over the University of Dallas on Sunday.

After numerous fruitless attacks for Southwestern, the Pirates got the goal they had been searching for with just over nine minutes to play in the first half. Kyle Allen started the attack after dribbling through the Crusaders' midfield and fed Steven Resnik down the left side. Resnik tracked down the ball and played a lofting cross into the box where Kirk Kemnitz awaited. Kemnitz headed it home just inside the left post to give SU a 1-0 lead.

Southwestern held onto the lead into the second half, but UD came out determined to even the count as they sent a barrage of shots at Daniel Poole in goal. Poole held strong, making diving saves to keep the shutout intact.

With 23 minutes to play in the match, SU got a little breathing room as Allen and Michael Olivares executed a perfect give-and-go just left of the goal. Allen received the return pass inside the 18 and finished into the right netting to give Southwestern a 2-0 lead late.

The Pirates added one more goal in the 83rd minute as Paden Williams outran UD defender Mikhail Castillo down the right sideline and fed the ball into the box as he fell to the ground. Olivares smartly dummied the ball through his legs, allowing Resnik a clear look at goal to put SU up 3-0.

Dallas attempted a comeback as Juan Hernandez-Reyes was left unmarked deep in Pirate territory and he took advantage, easily burying the ball in the back of the net with just under four minutes to play. Resnik put the icing on the cake as he scored on a breakaway with just seven ticks left on the clock and handing SU the 4-1 win.

Southwestern trailed 15-10 in shots but had five of those ten on goal while UD managed five shots on frame in their 15.

The Pirates improve to 9-5 on the year and 7-1 in the SCAC with the win while UD falls to 5-7-1 and 1-6-1. SU heads out on the road to face Austin College in their next match, playing on Friday night at 7 p.m.
