Men’s soccer remains undefeated in conference play

GEORGETOWN, Texas - With a 3-0 win over Austin College on Friday night the Southwestern men's soccer team kept a spotless conference record to remain atop the leaderboard.

Southwestern started strong and got three early corner kicks and two free kicks deep in 'Roo territory in the opening ten minutes. The persistence of the Pirates paid-off quickly as Timothy Eamma sent a beautiful lofting corner kick into the box to the back post where Zach Faulkner was perched. Faulkner skied above the rest and headed the ball home to give Southwestern an early 1-0 lead.

A red card was handed out to Austin College just before the half closed, giving the Pirates a one-man advantage for the remainder of the contest. The half came to a close with a slight 1-0 advantage for the Pirates.

The match got more physical as the clock ticked through the opening ten minutes of the second half. Two fouls deep in Pirate territory posed a threat for Southwestern but Daniel Poole punched the ball out of harm's way to keep a 1-0 SU lead.

Southwestern continued to press and chipped away at the Austin College defense, finding the weak parts to exploit throughout the remainder of the game. Even with a one-man advantage and well-executed sets the Pirates weren't able to extend their lead until the 72nd minute, taking advantage of a 'Roo mistake. Matthew Nickell fed the ball well in front of Michael Oliveras. Oliveras gave chase but was beat to the ball by AC's keeper Celio. Celio, 18 yards out of goal, attempted a clear and missed the ball giving Oliveras the open goal and ball inside the 18. Oliveras touched the ball home to give SU a 2-0 lead late in the contest.

A diving header by Paden Williams in the 78th minute gave Southwestern plenty of breathing room to finish out the match. Eamma recorded his second assist on the play, crossing the ball into the box from the right wing inside the six yard box. Williams tracked the ball down and sent it home with a flourish to give SU the 3-0 final.

Poole recorded two saves in the shutout victory while his counterpart, Celio, had seven saves in the loss. The Pirates led 17-7 in shots and 4-3 in corners.

The win improves SU to 6-4 on the year and 4-0 in the SCAC while Austin College drops to 2-5-1 and 2-2. Southwestern remains at home to face Centenary College on Sunday for a 2 p.m. kickoff.
