Men’s Soccer remains undefeated in conference play with 2-1 win over TLU

GEORGETOWN, Texas - A high-octane game saw the Pirates down Texas Lutheran 2-1 on Sunday afternoon, keeping SU's conference record spotless at 3-0.

A TLU foul deep in Bulldog territory gave Southwestern the advantage the Pirates needed to take control of the game. Evan Javors took the free kick just outside the 18 and lofted the ball into the box. The ball bounced and was headed to Steven Resnik by Michael Oliveras. Resnik attacked and headed the ball into goal, past the fingertips of TLU's keeper to give Southwestern a 1-0 lead.

After the goal Southwestern keeper Daniel Poole was pelted with shots on goal but made sensational saves to keep the Bulldogs scoreless heading into the waning minutes of the half.

Carreno-Mendez gave Southwestern a two-goal lead with a beautifully placed shot from straight on just outside the 18. Mendez angled the ball just inside the right post as it careened off the post and into the netting on the opposite side for a 2-0 Pirate lead.

The half came to a close with SU retaining a two goal advantage, but about 10 minutes into the second half TLU cut into the lead with a goal from Alejandro Martinez from straight on. His shot was a bullet into the back of the net leaving Poole no chance at the save to bring the count to 2-1.

Both teams had numerous close calls as the game wound to a close but the Pirates were able to hang on for the 2-1 win.

The game was even in shots with each team making 12 attempts at goal while Southwestern trailed 4-1 in corner kicks. Poole was huge in goal with six saves while Michael recorded seven in the loss.

Southwestern improves to 5-4 on the year and remain undefeated at 3-0 in the SCAC. They remain at home to face Austin College on Friday night with an anticipated start time of 8 p.m.
