Relentless pressure gives Pirates second conference win

Relentless pressure gives Pirates second conference win

GEORGETOWN, Texas - Southwestern earned their second conference win and remain at the top of the leaderboard with a 2-0 win over Schreiner on Saturday afternoon.

The game opened at a frenzied pace by both teams, testing defenses early and often. The defensive lines stepped up the challenge and Southwestern's attacks were stymied by numerous offside calls.

Southwestern finally saw their hard work pay off in the 26th minute as Timothy Eamma had a great touch pass that pulled the keeper out of goal. Steven Resnik touched the ball past the streaking keeper and into the goal, handing Southwestern a 1-0 lead.

Seven minutes later SU once again took advantage of a keeper mistake as Kyle Allen sent a lofting cross to lead Andres Carreno-Mendez down the right side. Mendez collected the pass and attacked goal but lost track of the ball after his first touch but drew the keeper out of position. Mendez kept with it and took the ball away from Lawson and lofted a shot over the remaining defense and into the net, giving SU a 2-0 lead heading into halftime.

Southwestern continued to press in the second half and took the mindset that their best defense was by attacking. SU took four shots and five corners kicks in the half and held the Mountaineers to five shots and just one corner.

Schreiner played until the final moments of the game and had some of their best looks in the waning minutes, but Daniel Poole and the Southwestern defense held strong and closed out the game for the 2-0 win.

The Pirates took 13 shots while holding Schreiner to seven and had seven corners. Poole had five saves in the shutout win while Schreiner's Lawson notched seven while allowing two goals.

Southwestern remains at home with a quick turnaround, facing Texas Lutheran on Sunday at 2 pm.
