Pirates held scoreless in loss to Pacific Lutheran

PARKLAND, Wash. - Southwestern's offense was stilted as the Pirates fell 3-0 to Pacific Lutheran on Friday evening. 

The Pirates began the game with an attacking mind but were called offside three times in the opening seven minutes. PLU siezed control of the game in the 23rd minute as Justin Manao snuck one past starting keeper Travis Carmichael to put SU down 1-0. 

With a 1-0 defecit after the half Southwestern found their stride offensively and had great looks at goal that just didn't materialize. PLU extended their lead with two goals in less than two minutes. Derek Johnson scored in the 77th minute just inside the 18 and Giancarlo Santoro followed in the 79th minutes from six yards out. 

Southwestern trailed 15-9 in shots and 6-1 in corner kicks. Carmichael was busy in his first collegiate start in goal, recording seven saves in the match.

The match drops the Pirates to 3-3 on the year. They remain in Washington for a rematch with Puget Sound at 2:30 PDT. Southwestesrn won the first contest 1-0 at home to open the season.
