Men’s soccer falls in overtime

SAN ANTONIO, Texas - A goal five and a half minutes into overtime by Luther College gave the Pirates a 1-0 loss on Saturday evening.

It was a physical match right from the outset as both teams worked to control the match. Most of the action happened in the midfield as the two teams got off just six total shots in the opening frame.

Luther came out of the half refreshed and with renewed vigor, launching 13 shots in the second half. The SU defense fended off the attack and the game remained tied through regulation.

Southwestern had the first real opportunity to take the win just 17 seconds into overtime, but Steven Resnik's shot slid wide of goal. In the 96th minute, Luther stole the win as Brock Arend scored unassisted.

The Pirates were outshot 19-4 in the match and took one fewer corner, 4-3. Daniel Poole posted five saves in the match.

The loss drops SU to 1-1 on the year. They return to action on Friday as they face UT Dallas in Abilene at 2 p.m.
