Baker Goal, Poole Save Launch Pirates Into Semi-Finals

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Southwestern scored a goal in the early stages of the game and in the last 90 seconds while Daniel Poole kept the lead alive with a save in the final seconds of the game as the Pirates won their opener at the SCAC Conference Tournament 2-1 over Colorado College.

The Pirates came out on a mission, taking the first four shots before Colorado could even get off one. The fourth, a drive by Thomas Davis, went in the back of the net in the 11th minute of the game. Southwestern rode the 1-0 lead into halftime, keeping their attack alive with five first half shots while allowing Colorado College just two.

CC sprang into action as the second half got underway, doing a role-reversal with the Pirates by taking the first two shots and two corners of the half. The Tigers were able to even the count on a free kick from almost 30 yards out.

Southwestern kept charging and ripping shots off throughout the rest of the game. Their perseverance paid off in the waning minutes as Forrest Baker (pictured) drilled in a shot off of Steven Resnik's corner with less than 90 seconds left of the clock.

Colorado, sensing the upset, came back strong with their biggest weapon, Matt Fechter, but Daniel Poole made the save of the game as the clock ran out to give the Pirates the 2-1 win.

SU outshot the Tigers 15-8 in the game but had three fewer corners (7-4). Poole logged three saves in goal in the contest.

The win moves the Pirates into the semi-finals tomorrow night. Southwestern will face off with #2 seed Oglethorpe University at 7:30pm.
