Strong First Half Overpowers Pirates

Strong First Half Overpowers Pirates

SAN ANTONIO, Texas - A strong first half attack resulted in three goals for Trinity and Southwestern was unable to recover as the Pirates fell 4-1 to TU on Friday night. The loss drops SU to 6-6-1 on the year and 3-2-0 in the SCAC while Trinity remains unbeaten with a 10-0-2 record, 5-0-0 in conference action.

Trinity started things off with their first goal of the night in the 17th minute and added goals in the 27th and 44th minutes to put Southwestern down 3-0 at the half. Despite the lopsided score the shot count was much closer, with the Tigers taking a slight 7-3 shot advantage with the Pirates taking just one fewer corner (4-3) then TU.

Southwestern's defense was tested in the second half as the Tigers turned up the heat. Six minutes into the half TU added the fourth and final goal of the contest. The Pirates found a new gear with the 4-0 deficit and wouldn't allow another goal the remainder of the game despite Trinity getting off 14 shots.

In the 80th minute SU got the goal they were looking for to start a comeback when Ryan Jones found Thomas Davis (pictured). The goal was too late to really start a rally, however, as the time ticked to a close and Southwestern fell 4-1.

It was a physical contest with 25 fouls and five yellow cards accumulated between the two teams.

Southwestern returns to the pitch at home to face Hendrix on Friday, October 21 at 7:00 pm for the Power Up Pirates weekend.
