Men's Soccer Busts Out of the Gate at Conference Opener

SEWANEE, Tenn. - It took just 46 seconds for the Pirates to take control of their SCAC conference opener on Friday night against Sewanee and cruised to a 2-1 victory. The win improves SU to 4-4-1 on the year, 1-0 in the SCAC, while Sewanee drops to 5-2-1 and 0-1.

Coming off a hot match last week with his first hat trick of the season, Evan Perkins picked up right where he left off scoring on the first shot of the game, assisted by Tim Eamma. Southwestern continued to pound away at the Tigers but Sewanee was able to sneak one past the SU defense in the 23rd minute to tie the score at 1-1.

Ten minutes later Southwestern regained the lead when Charlie Schreck, assisted by Colin McCulloch, scored in the 33rd minute. SU took a 2-1 lead at that point and tightened their belts defensively and wouldn't allow another goal to close out the game 2-1.

Southwestern trailed 16-13 in shots but had one more corner opportunity than the Tigers (5-4). Nick Pierce had a strong night in goal, recording eight saves.

The Pirates remain on the road as they head to face Centre on Sunday afternoon. Centre fell to Trinity 3-0 this evening.
