Men's Soccer Falls in Nighttime Showdown

Men's Soccer Falls in Nighttime Showdown

RICHARDSON, Texas - Southwestern men's soccer faced tough competition on Friday evening and played an impressive, physical match against  the University of Texas Dallas. SU fell 1-0 in overtime to the Comets to fall to 1-2-1 on the year.

After a delayed start due to a double-overtime match in game one of the ASC/SCAC Round Robin, Southwestern took to the pitch to face one of the top teams in the American Southwest Conference. UTD got the first few shots off in the game, but none were a threat to the Pirates.

Forrest Baker had the first strong look of the contest in the 21st minute, but his shot sailed just high of the crossbar. Matthew Nickell added a shot in the 39th minute but was saved by UTD's defense, resulting in a corner kick for the Pirates. Timothy Eamma lofted the ball into the box but SU was not able to redirect the ball into the goal.

The second half was a repeat of the first with both teams having their opportunities but not capitalizing and the game moved into overtime.

UT Dallas went on the attack at the outset of overtime and scored the game winner in the 96th minute. Travis White crossed the ball from the right side of the box to Austin Mading who found the back of the net.

Southwestern trailed 21-6 in shots and had just one corner opportunity to UTD's five. Pirate keeper Nick Pierce was busy in goal, recording nine saves on the evening.

SU remains at UTD on Saturday afternoon to take on Hardin Simmons in a neutral site contest. HSU tied Trinity 1-1 in double overtime in game one of the night. Game time is set for 5:30pm.
