Double Overtime Thriller Ends in Tie

Double Overtime Thriller Ends in Tie

SAN ANTONIO, Texas - The Pirates found themselves in a battle on Labor Day against Greenville College and 110 minutes were not enough to decide the contest as the game came to a close with the score tied 1-1. The tie moves the Pirates to 1-1-1 on the year.

Greenville got on the board first, and early, in the contest. In the 14th minute of action GC's Dan Taylor scored unassisted to give the Panthers a 1-0 lead. Southwestern was unable to score in the first half, despite taking just as many shots, an Greenville took the slight 1-0 advantage into the break.

The Pathers turned up the attack in the second half, keeping veteran keeper Nick Pierce (pictured) busy in goal with 11 second half shots, but it was the Pirates' Thomas Davis who got a goal in the second half to tie the count 1-1. Davis, assisted by Paden Williams and Steven Resnik, gave SU a boost in the 67th minute.

Regulation ended with the score tied and the two teams headed into an extra frame where defense took over. Neither team was able to get a shot off until the 99th minute where Greenville's Cobi Allen nearly ended the game, but his shot ricocheted off the post and Ryan Sanfilippo's follow-up was blocked and clear by the strong Pirate defensive line.

SU's Forrest Baker was the first to get a good luck in the second overtime, but his shot was blocked. Two corner kicks preceded the shot but neither was effective. Resnik attempted to get in on the goal scoring but his shot was saved by GC keeper Spencer Pulliam and the game closed out in a 1-1 tie.

Southwestern remains on the road to face the University of Texas Dallas in Richardson on Friday before facing Hardin-Simmons in a neutral site match on September 10th.
