Pirates Dominate on Senior Day

GEORGETOWN, Texas – The Southwestern University Pirates men's lacrosse seniors led the team to a 25-6 victory over the University of Dallas Crusaders in the penultimate home game of their collegiate careers.

Senior Everett Barger led the team with seven points, scoring three goals and dishing out a team-high four assists on senior day. Fellow senior Kai Knight-Turcan, who will leave the lacrosse team as its all-time leading scorer, finished with three goals and three assists.

Southwestern struck early, scoring a pair of unassisted goals in the first three minutes from Barger and Benjamin Libby. Tyler Smith put Dallas on board with an unassisted goal at the 10:55 mark but the Pirates answered with three consecutive goals with Barger scoring on one and assisting on another. Austin Gibbons ended the run with an unassisted goal with 2:39 remaining in the first quarter before Knight-Turcan found Zac Asbury to take a 6-2 lead at the end of the first.

The Pirates broke the game open in the second quarter, scoring 11 goals to just two from Dallas, including a 7-0 run to take a 17-4 lead at the half.

Southwestern turned to a keep away offense in the second half, running half the shot clock away before running any threatening actions but still managed to extend the lead. Jared Welsh scored a goal on a pass from Benjamin Libby in the opening minute of the second half and Barger found Jacob Hamilton for another. Dallas' Tucker Jameson broke up the run but Libby scored one and assisted on another before Jake Frederick scored the last Crusader goal of the game with 2:40 remaining in the third quarter.

The Pirates added four more in the fourth quarter.

Southwestern dominated face offs, winning all but three, taking a 48-9 advantage in shots.

With the win, the Pirates improve 9-6 on the season. Southwestern will close out its regular season on Friday, April 19 against Centenary.
