Pirates Shutout In First Quarter in Loss to Berry Vikings

MOUNT BERRY, Ga. – The Southwestern University men's lacrosse team ended its road trip with a 24-8 loss to the Berry Vikings.

Berry overwhelmed Southwestern in the first quarter, building a 10-0 lead with Luke Koferl starting the game with back-to-back goals and scoring three in the quarter. Berry added another goal to start the second before the Pirates got on the board with back-to-back goals form Zac Asbury, getting the first on an assist from Logan Spalding.

The Vikings responded with four more goals before Asbury ended the run with a goal off a Kai Knight-Turcan assist with 43 seconds remaining in the half to trail 15-3 at the break.

Berry scored four consecutive goals to start the second half, with Blake Sterger and Cody Foster responding with two unassisted Southwestern goals before Berry answered with a Josh Baker goal.

The Pirates opened the fourth quarter with back-to-back goals from Knight-Turcan and Asbury and Benjamin Libby added another Southwestern goal. Berry scored four in the fourth.

Berry outshot Southwestern 54-30, taking a 59-25 edge in groundballs and winning 29 of the 36 face-offs. With the loss, the Pirates drop to 6-4 on the season. Southwestern will host North Central (Ill.) on Thursday, March 21 at 7:00 p.m.
