Men's Lax Closes Season with Loss to Rhodes

GEORGETOWN - The Southwestern University men's lacrosse team closed the books on 2018 with one of their best defensive efforts of the season, but ultimately fell short to SAA Champion Rhodes by the score of 8-6 on Saturday afternoon at Varsity Field.

The Lynx out shot the Pirates 39-24 while forcing Southwestern into 24 turnovers to Rhodes' 16. Rhodes also held a 35-23 advatange in ground balls, but the Pirates held the Lynx to 1 of 5 in man up opportunities.

Rhodes opened up a 2-0 lead in the first before a goal from junior Everett Barger got the Pirates on the board. The Lynx closed with a goal in the final two minutes to take a 3-1 lead after on quarter of play.

The Pirates came out firing in the second quarter as seniors Jordan Riggs and Matt Amerie scored back-to-back goals to even the game at three a piece. Rhodes added a goal before half to make it a 4-3 game going into the break.

Freshman Zac Asbury opened the second half with a goal to even it at four, but the Lynx closed the quarter with two goals to take a 6-4 lead going into the final period.

Southwestern got within one goal two times on goals from Asbury and junior Logan Spalding, but Rhodes was able to respond with goals both times to pull away and take the road win 8-6.

Asbury scored two goals to go with one assist while four different Pirates added a goal. Junior Kai Knight-Turcan added an assist in the contest. Defensively, sophomore Tanner Wallace had three caused turnovers and three ground balls while sophomore Bailey Middleton had two caused turnovers. Junior Kyle Kuberski had nine saves in the cage with three ground balls.

Southwestern honored four senior beforehand in Riggs, Amerie, Kyle Kuberski, and Sean Smith. The Pirates conclude the season at 9-7 under Head Coach Bill Bowman.
