Pirates rally for season-opening win over Hendrix, 10-8

CONWAY, Ark. - Southwestern scored three goals in the final 11 minutes to upend Hendrix in its season opener, 10-8, Saturday.

Kai Knight-Turcan scored the equalizer and game-winner within 34 seconds in the final period. Jared Welsh added an insurance goal to give the Pirates (1-0) a two-score margin.

Southwestern led 5-4 at halftime, but the Warriors (0-1) pulled even at the end of the third frame. Hendrix took an 8-7 lead with 13:14 remaining in the contest, before the Bucs' late-game heroics.

Southwestern managed 35 shots in the game, led by Matt Amerie, who attempted eight and found the back of the net four times.

Spence Bodenhamer tallied a team-high five points, as the first-year posted two goals and three assists in his collegiate debut.

The Pirates will return to action on Feb. 10 at Millsaps.
